At an elevation of 7,000 feet, Monticello has a distinctly cooler climate than much of the rest of San Juan County. Monticello is located near the entrance to the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park. The town is the county seat and supports an elementary school and Monticello High School (grades 7-12).
